So I started an in-person game of my Slayers Pathfinder RPG. A new player joined who’s a mix between Gaston from Beauty and the Beast and Dio Brando From Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and we’ve also got Seyruun Noble Ira Gamagoori from the last game coming back. This should be interesting. I’m holding Gamagoori responsible for keeping Magic Gaston in line with MAXIMUM LAWFUL GOOD powers. The streets are already littered with the bodies of bandits. Let’s just hope the local rich old man can convince them to raid the Dragon Fangs hideout for his stolen enchanted coat hanger so that they can pick up a certain Orihalcon artifact in the process…
In my line of work, one must be prepared for the expenses that come with maintaining an image! I mean, yeah, sure, most of my bandit money goes toward food, but a fair chunk of the rest goes toward hair upkeep! Do you have any idea how much shampoo this much hair takes? A lot!
[ OOC Note: A hearty (but playful) ‘damn you’ to the anon who sent this because I had to dig up the scene where Lina wakes up after Gourry’s kidnapping in NEXT to find a good shot of Lina with her hair not done up for this. ;_;
Edit: Oh, yuck, Tumblr hella shrank the image. Here’s a full version.]
can you imagine Naga’s reaction to Amelia’s relationship with Zel though.
"Seriously? I like golems too Amelia, but not like that.”
And Amelia just dies and Zelgadis goes outside and buries his head in the garden or something.
I have never wanted anything so badly before. I would sell my children for these.
Except maybe if they made one of Gaav. Then I’d sell them and everything else.
They will never make a Zelgadis figure.
Super cute Zelgadis and Amelia pins released by a circle at a recent doujinshi event in Japan. For the life of me, I can’t figure out who the artist was though. Anyone know?

Okay so… since when is Fakir Arabic? Not saying it’s impossible or anything, but I don’t recall anything in canon that would point to this.
Why does a character who is very very slightly tanner suddenly equal “not white” on Tumblr? Like, various shades of white people and mixed raced people exist too…
There’s a population of people in Germany with olive skin tones, dark hair and green eyes, likely descended from a Roman population that colonized there and interbred with the native Germans. That’s what my dad’s side of the family is. To be fair, though, the ancient Romans were not white in the way they are often depicted in modern media. While genetically they’d still classify as Caucasian, they were on the darker end of “white people.” Of course genetically many Indian people classify as Caucasian, but no one in America at least is about to call them “white people,” so…
Although now that I look into it, Iranian people are also classified similarly, so maybe I’m full of shit and have no idea what I’m talking about. Was I talking about Princess Tutu? WHY AM I ANALYZING THIS FICTIONAL CHARACTER’S ANCESTRY WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TUMBLR.
Suddenly this got way more complicated than I intended.
(aka this series gives me a lot of superhero feels and I have too much time on my hands and gave way too much thought for a meta that maybe a dozen people will read. OH WELL.)
There are a lot of things wrong when you, as a society, go from perpetually discriminating against a group of individuals to turning them into objects of worship.
There are two ways to dehumanise someone: either by objectifying them or by idolising them. Stuck in an industrial complex based on consumerist media sensationalism and the cult of celebrity, the Heroes of Hero TV went from being a marginalised group to being put on a pedestal.
Maverick developed Hero TV for NEXTs to be accepted into the mainstream, but they only ended up swapping one form of objectification for another.
The media in T&B universe fostered a culture that normalises the commodification of compassion, selflessness and altruism, that turns NEXTs into a product of entertainment and exploitation while simultaneously shoving them into a black/white narrative about becoming a Hero.
One thing that I’ve noticed while rewatching and reading Slayers, is that unless I’m not recalling something (and if I am, it’s only once or twice likely), Zelgadis is never referred to as not human by anyone but enemies. And even enemies 90% of the time refer to him as human (if they refer to him by anything that would denote what he is at all).
Among fans, I feel as if there’s a tendency to have Zelgadis think of himself as not human/angst about it and talk about how he ‘wants to be human again’, but when Zel talks about himself in the series it’s always ‘this body’ or ‘this curse’ or ‘this form’. One or two times he says ‘turned me into a chimera’, but that’s it. He doesn’t say he wants to be human again. He says he wants to ‘get his body back to normal’ or he wants ‘his cure’. He even calls himself human directly and with pride (‘because unlike you, I’m human’). The people around him refer to him as human as well, and it doesn’t ever come across like they’re doing it to comfort him.
So I think there’s a bit of dissonance between the fandom and the series in that Zelgadis is so often portrayed as thinking of himself as not human (and being really angsty about that), but in the series itself he doesn’t seem to have that problem? And in fact, his wording seems to carefully avoid that, as if his humanity that he knows he still has is something he clings onto, perhaps to cope with what’s happened to him. Because Rezo took a lot away, but he can’t take that.
Hmm, I’d never thought about that before, but I think you’re right. I wonder if early on, not long after his change, Zelgadis thought of himself as a monster, but began to realize that despite the physical changes and enhanced magic and endurance, there was nothing different about his personality or the way he thought. There’s really no indication that being turned into a chimera changed his brain structure in any way, and he clearly still has a human soul.
